Spring 2019 in the Northern Hemisphere will begin on Wednesday March 20.
Spring time – sweet! The whole Earth smiles, thy coming to greet – unknown.
March is the perfect month to shop for new outdoor planters while the selection is the best and the stores aren’t so busy with the spring gardening season rush!
Four things to consider when selecting a planter: style, size, material and colour.
Style – Think about the style of your home when selecting your planter so they coexist nicely. If your home is contemporary, consider contemporary shaped planters with straight clean lines. A classic home would be nice with formal classic style planters. Formal planters are usually shaped like urns. They are equally deep and wide but are broader at the top than the base. The usually come in a black cast iron.
Size – Your planters should be in proportion to scale, to the size of your home, especially if they are by your front door. For a different approach you can also try groupings of pots to increase the scale. Always buy the larger planters rather than the smaller ones. Larger planters require less watering and there is more room for the roots to grow, so your plants are happier and healthier.
Materials – Big choices here – fiberglass, cast cement, cast iron, glazed ceramics, and terra-cotta to name a few. Water evaporates more quickly from porous materials like terra-cotta than other materials like plastic. We are big fans of unique specialty planters.
Colour – We love planters to pop when see from the street so we highly recommend using a planter in a contrasting colour to the background. We love black planters! They look best with anything. Also check your outdoor light fixtures, any shutters, easedrops, window casings and front door, using a planter to coordinate the colour theme.

Christmas – pinecones, berries, red twigs, yellow twigs, dogwood, sticks and ornaments!
Our favourite season to add is Christmas. Fall is also a favourite season to add pumpkins and straw.
